The No Gun Ri Digital Archive began as a research project in 2012 with the support of Faculty Research Award Program (FRAP) from the University at Albany (State University of New York). From 2015 to 2017, this project was supported by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea. With the generous support of NRF, we could create the current form of the digital platform. Many people have participated in this project throughout the years: Donghee Sinn, Catherine Stollar-Peters, Nicholas Soares, You-Seung Kim, Eunha Yoon, Taeyeon Park, Su-Jin Kim, Bandee Ryu, Moonsoo Hyun, Jinkyung Park, and Yang-hee Bae.
This project would have not been possible without the help and support by many people. The stories and documents by the Chung family and oral histories of survivors and families, Sunyong Park, Kooho Chung, Haechan Yang, Haesook Yang, Sooyong Bae, and Koodo Chung are the foundation of the archives. Also oral histories of No Gun Ri Peace Park and Museum staff members, Sungwoo Ko and Keunhyang Lee, added significantly to the archives. We are also grateful for the accommodation from Mr. Koodo Chung and the No Gun Ri Peace Park and Museum for our project.
The No Gun Ri Digital Archive hopes to be an open platform to discuss the memory and history of No Gun Ri Massacre. We believe that we all can be part of the No Gun Ri memory and the memory will continue in our lives. We hope the No Gun Ri Digital Archive to be a space where we witness and engage in the social memory of No Gun Ri based on the pieces of No Gun Ri stories housed in the Archive. We sincerely hope that the No Gun Ri Digital Archive shares the empathy of the survivors and families and bring their stories to the world through the web.
‘노근리 디지털 아카이브’는 뉴욕주립대(University at Albany, State University of New York)의 교수연구지원프로그램(Faculty Research Award Program)의 지원으로 2012년 시작되었고, 2015년부터2017년까지 3년간 한국연구재단 일반공동 연구지원사업의 지원을 받아 2018년 현재의 모습을 갖추게 되었습니다. ‘노근리 디지털 아카이브’ 연구팀에는 신동희, Catherine Stollar-Peters, Nicholas Soares, 김유승, 윤은하, 박태연, 김수진, 류반디, 현문수, 박진경, 배양희 등 많은 사람들이 참여하였습니다.
노근리 디지털 아카이브는 노근리사건을 알리기 위해 노력한 정은용, 정구도님의 자료와 노근리 생존자들의 증언, 노근리평화공원의 자료들을 바탕으로 마련되었습니다. 저희 연구팀에게 자료와 편의를 제공해주신 정구도님, 노근리 생존자로 저희에게 증언을 들려주신, 박선용님, 배수용님, 정구호님, 양해찬님, 양해숙님, 그리고 노근리 평화공원의 학예연구사로 저희 연구에 도움을 주신 고성우님, 이근향님이안계셨다면 노근리 디지털아카이브는 존재하지 못했을 것입니다. 진심으로 감사의 말씀을 전합니다.
‘노근리 디지털 아카이브’는 노근리사건의 역사와 기억을 담는 플랫폼이고자 합니다. 노근리사건의 기억은 우리 모두의 것이라고, 누구도 우리의 기억을 멈출 수 없다고 믿습니다. 노근리사건이 세대와 경계를 넘어 지속되는 집단기억으로 형성되어, 새로운 맥락에서 이해되고, 인식되길 바랍니다. ‘노근리 디지털 아카이브’는 이러한 소망을 위해 노근리 기억의 조각들을 오픈 플랫폼의 형식으로 담아내고자 합니다. 노근리 디지털 아카이브가 노근리 희생자분들과 유가족들의 이야기를 전달하는 작은 이야기터 될 수 있기를 기원합니다.
